Malala and I
Malala and I
In December 2008, the Taliban in he Swat Valley began banning girls education in January 2009. The ban would affect 50,000 school girls. One young girl, Malala Yousafzi, actively opposed this ban from the beginning, creating a blog that depicted life for women and girls under Taliban rule. In October, 2009, a Taliban assassin shot Malala point-blank in the head on her way home from school.
"On the day when I was shot, all of my friends' faces were covered, except mine," said Malala I was not expecting them to kill a young girl or to kill a child."
The bullet narrowly missed Malala's brain and she was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England six days after the attack. She spent nearly three months in the hospital and underwent numerous surgeries.
Malala's strength and courage in the aftermath of this attack have made her an inspiration to people world-wide. Despite this support, the Taliban still continues to threaten her and her family's lives, and Malala and her family are now living in Birmingham and she is back at school.
Today, I was honored to meet this 16 year-old worldwide symbol for peace and education. I congratulated her on being the youngest person to ever be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. I mentioned to her that I'm also a blogger concerned about human rights in Egypt, I asked her to dedicate some of her speech to help the woman of Egypt against the verbal abuse and domestic violence face them and the ingress of sexual harassment against Egyptian woman in public and home also at the work place.
Malala and her father promised me to spread the word. I'm so grateful to both of them and glad that they will spread my message.
